…for the religious beliefs of Mormons.
I know my title struck an immediate nerve. Probably the same nerve I experienced when I ran across an article titled “Mormon Church Finally Says Dark Skin is Not a Sign of God’s Curse”.
History of a Mormon:
Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, a religion founded in the US in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. Some of you may know of Mormons for their practice in polygamy (which created a conflict with our government, causing Smith to re-locate and base out of Salt Lake City, Utah).
Mormons dark skin relation to sin:
In Smith’s version of the bible (Bible of Mormons) dark skin is a sign of God’s curse, while white skin is a sign of his blessing. Tracing back to the 1800’s when our world was segregated due to slavery, is where this “blackness of Africans” belief originated.
I was intrigued and thought many of you might be as well. I will not allow mindlessness to deter my peace of mind, so my present response to this finding is happiness. We’re still cleaning up the unfortunate circumstances that originated as a result of slavery (and likely always will). But this shows progress is being made, even if it’s over a century later.
